Snail Mail - An Ode to US Mail
Thoughtful, personal, more intimate than an email or text. Snail mail, at least to me, is a more intentional way of sharing thoughts, feelings, and sentiments. And who doesn’t love the feeling of going to your mailbox every day in anticipation of what may arrive?
I have always been the one to “check the mail” in my house, even as a kid. The wonder of what may arrive always had me curious and excited. You see, back in the 70’s and 80’s that was how we kept in touch with friends we met at camp, grandparents who lived miles away, or family who were in the service or otherwise deployed to other fascinating places. Running out after the mail man made his drop was the highlight of my day.
In a time when “checking the mail” more often refers to email. Snail mail has become a lost art. Well, I want to bring it back! Mail for no reason; mail for a word of encouragement (my Daddy is the best at this by the way); mail to send a snippet of an article, fun quote, or awesome sticker you found that someone would love. And mail for the obvious reasons, like birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, holidays, etc.
I want to bring it back in a creative way and encourage fun stationery and cards, handmade and created by local artists, or making the cards yourself! That is when the most intention happens, when you buy a card created by a local artist because it reminds you of someone, shares a specific sentiment, or represents something truly special. And if you make the card yourself? Well, that is when you get mega “intention points” in my book! Especially the kind of creative card that the recipient can then later use as a piece of art, framing it, displaying it, and keeping it as a special commemorative piece.
But don’t forget the addressing of the card and applying a special intention to the “mailing” of the special piece! When I get an envelope stamped with a fun commemorative stamp, it intrigues me even more about what it inside. And if there is a fun sticker or two, or sketch on the outside? Well, the anticipation is even greater and more fun! The sender has taken time to not only bless me in the receipt of this special mail, but has also blessed every mail handler on its way, sharing smiles and creativity as it passes through our awesome US Mail process.
So, what are you going to send today? Who are you going to send it to? Let’s up our snail mail game! Send your thoughtful, intentional positive thoughts to a friend or family member, and send it with some creativity. Give them the excitement of finding your mail in their mailbox, covered in thoughtful, colorful happiness. You will bless a mail carrier and yourself in the process!
